Excited to get started!

Well only two more sleeps till we head off to snowy Colorado! I am looking forward to updating you on our adventures and getting to know all your amazingly talented children.

I am hoping to bring a fresh face and lots of humour to the team as I am probably the least likely to ski, exercise, cook or well…..just get up in the morning before 8am! This will definitely be an adventure. I am hoping your children will teach me more about the world of skiing and I can show them a bit artistic flare.

Hmmmmm, what am I most excited about? Eating oatmeal everyday! I heard Erica makes the best, better than Pete? We will see……

To be continued….

Camp started in Vail and it finished in Vail

Aidan-Our last day in Colorado, so we decided to go to the season opening of Vail. With nine lifts open and many hills, it made to be a great day. The weather was fair and the food was good, (we got french fries!) It ended up to be a good decision.

In the morning we ate a little bit of oatmeal, because we knew the breakfast boritos at the hill wood be delicious, and they were. There was free hot chocolate in the morning and long lines for the chair/gondola. We skied many runs before heading in for lunch, then skied untill three o’clock. After we changed out of our ski stuff, we walked around the village, there was a concert playing, which we watched for about 20 seconds untill their speakers lost power, so we waited, and soon enough they were back to playing. There was free protein drinks called “Muscle Milk” which tasted pretty good, but we ended up going to Starbucks as well. There was another Lindsay Vonn sighting but this time there were no signed body parts..

Once we returned home we packed, had a breakfast dinner, you know pancakes, eggs and home fries the stuff we missed all week. We then tuned our skis, right now we are ready to go to bed, as it is getting late, and we will land in Toronto at 4:30 tomorrow. All though skiing was fun, we are glad to see our family’s, and can’t wait to be home. Oh, and Happy Birthday Dad, you don’t look a day over 51!

See you tomorrow,

Aidan

Goodbye powder, hello blue skies!

Today was our second last day on snow in Colorado. Everyone got their own three private runs with Ali Hunter, along with the usual drills from Pete. The groomed runs and warmer temperatures were a special treat, after many days of leg burning powder, and chilly weather. The slopes were also not very crowded, although our quest to make it in the front row of the parking lot was not reached.

Also, our team was spooked today when the avalanche blasting echoed through out the entire Loveland ridge. Peter stopped the group at the top of the hill, and pointed out two tiny people from across the valley. They turned out to be ski patrollers throwing dynamite down the parts of the hill that were closed. The sound takes quite a long time to travel, since we would see the explosions about 5  seconds before we actually heard it!

After a few intense card games of president , where Peter always found himself at the top, we went back outside for our last four runs at Loveland, for this year. Next, we came home to dryland, where the girls beat the boys in keep away, which is usual for us girls. Then, we came inside for another awesome meal made by Ali, which was tasty quesadillas and sweat potato fries!

Tomorrow is our last day skiing in Colorado, and should be a full day of beautiful skiing. We may go to Vail, for their opening day. It may be busy, but they claim to have nine chairlifts opened. I guess you will find out tomorrow!

See you soon,

Emily!

Another day of powder

Today everyone had a great day of powder. Everyone skied great and all participated in Walsham`s ski search. Nothing like walking around a hill hoping to step on the ski. He did find it after a while. Then Peter was hoping to get over a roller but his skis decided to POP off. So a face plant it was. Hope the snow was white Peter. Next for losing skis is Adian for going over a jump, landing it, sliding and off goes the ski! He found it shortly after.

Then Ali decided we should go ski some black  diamonds. They were awesome. But when you look down you can only see the parking lot and they either had moguls or were very choppy. I`m guessing she loves that kind of stuff. I think it was a good experience for all of us.

Can you guess who we saw today? The British Ski Team. Is that awesome or what? I was talking to a girl from the team and she likes Loveland more than Scotland that’s pretty hard to belive.

For dryland we headed over to the rec center for some dryland. While we were waiting for the wollyball court we played a basket ball game called Bump. I think almost everyone enjoyed that. When we finished basket ball we played wollyball. I know everyone enjoys that. There was no bloody noses this time, luckily.

And that’s it on today.

Your one day blogger,

Adeina

Pushing our Comfort Zone.

Todays blog is by Kate.

Today we all tested our limits in skiing and in food.  In skiing today we had another great day of powder.  We skied GS in the powder and in the bumps.  I think Peter will feel it in the morning.  We also made the terrain interesting by skiing with no poles.  Today was Ali’s first day skiing with us.   I hope she enjoyed it.  We had many of wipe out, but we are getting better at skiing powder.

Another challenge for today was that we all had to eat our least liked food.  It was very interesting.  Walsham and I had to eat this grape leaf stuffed with rice thing followed by peppers stuffed with cheese and some sort of meat.  I liked the peppers better personally.  Aidan had to eat some shrimp, everyone had one and thought it was great, but Aidan thought it was so so.  Emily tried yogurt for the first time, I don’t think she liked this at all, she ran to the sink but managed to keep it all in.  Ali and Adiena had to eat a green and black olive,  those two probably gagged the most.  Peter had to eat a Serrano pepper.  He tried it twice and didn’t like it anymore the second go round.  Walsham, Ali, and Aidan all took a bit of the pepper,  Walsham didn’t think it was that bad,  Ali said it was more spicy then she thought it would be, Aidan thought it was really spicy and he danced around the kitchen like he was at grade eight prom.  It was interesting to watch.

We are experiencing mid winter weather conditions the last couple of days, today it snowed most of the day, the most was when we went into town to do some shopping, we came home to a fresh eight inches on the drive way.  The snow was coming down and with the combination of wind it created crazy white-out. Again we are looking forward to first tracks tomorrow..

All and all another interesting and fun day in Colorado.

Till next time,

Kate

day 8 on snow, can we say POW…

We would like to thank Chris for the great effort he did with the blog, But now it’s the athletes time to take it over. Each athlete will have one day to comment on the days events or what every they want the pass on to the world.

This is Walsham. I get first day to write on the blog. Well anyways, today there wasn’t many people skiing at Loveland. Which is so AWESOME because there was quite a bit of powder. I’m pretty sure that we have all fallen this morning than all the other times put together. Two reasons, one because the powder and it took a couple runs to get use to, but we all loved it. And two, after lunch there wasn’t much powder left so we were all skiing on one ski. For the rest of the day, it was wipeout after wipeout for most of us. Emily only fell once (at least that is all she will admit). Don’t ask how many wipeouts I  had becuase I honestly don’t know. It was a great day of skiing, but our day is not over yet. After we got back, Ali made us awsome nachos. Then we went to the Silverthorne Recreation center to play some wallyball. Yes, wallyball. It is much like volleyball except you are in a squash court and the ball can hit off the walls. No big injuries, just Adeina’s bloody nose. It wasn’t too bad’ just a lot of blood. We came back, had curry turkey, did homework, and it brings me to writing this. So there is really no more to write. So I am now done writing,

Walsham out….

Last Day For Week One

Today is the end of the KVR camp for racers in the one week programme.  The bags are packed and in the van.  Erica and I plan to be on the road at 6:30.

Once again we had an excellent day as the weather remained clear, although a little colder than previous days.

This camp has been a great experience for all these kids and for me as well.

Yes, the days were long but it was fun and easy because we truly do have wonderful kids and outstanding coaches.  I was privileged to get to know your kids and our coaches in a way few of us ever get a chance to.

I have to tell you a little about Peter and Erica.

Both of them possess an unique ability to strike the perfect balance between coach, friend and mentor.  If I didn’t know any better, I could have sworn I was helping out a large family of 15 on a ski trip this past week.  They treat every one of these kids as if they were their own.

We as parents are fortunate to have such excellent coaches working with our kids.

I am looking forward to seeing some of you tomorrow afternoon when we arrive back in Toronto.

And to my good friends Vicki and Joanne, sadly, you will be disappointed.  I will NOT be wearing a speed suit when I return home!

Good luck to the racers who are staying on for week two of the KVR Preseason Race Camp.

Cheers from Colorado

The Laying Down of the Speed Suit Gauntlet

This post is for my good friends Vicki and Joanne (and probably a few more out there in the closet), who for some reason, unbeknownst to me, have a deep-seated desire to see their middle-aged balding guys in speed suits.

Never one to disapoint, I present the following.

CAUTION…What you are about to see below may be offensive to some viewers.   Blogger discretion is advised!

Now, as one can plainly see, I am laying it all out there!

So, I think it is only fitting, and indeed fair, that I lay down the gauntlet and challenge any other father, and in particular Alec and Jonathon, to post similarly embarrassing pictures of themselves in speed suits on the blog!

Now, if Jonathon and Alec are able to post pictures of Vicki and Joanne in speed suits, then gentlemen, I will bathe in your reflected glory!

And with that, I say goodnight!

Cheers from Colorado.

Remembrance Day at KVR

Remembrance Day

We lucked out with the weather today.  It did not snow as expected.  We had a couple of light flurries, but otherwise it was sunny blue skies.

Today the coaches worked on slalom drills with lots of video.  In fact the racers are reviewing the video with Peter as I write this.

Our Racers and their coaches celebrated Remembrance Day on the hill today at the appointed hour.  We found a nice spot near the top of the mountain in an area with many tall pines.  Our group gathered to pay our respects to those who have given their lives in defense of our country and fought to preserve the freedoms we all enjoy today.  Peter spoke to the kids about the meaning of the day and then asked each of them to come up with a word that described the significance of the day to them.  Erica then recounted a story of when she took her family east of Toronto to pay their respects to one of our fallen soldiers on The Highway of Heroes.  She encouraged our racers to do the same.

Our “Top Canadian” today goes to Olivia who, during our Remembrance Day ceremony, led the whole group in reciting In Flanders Fields.  She did an amazing job.

You should be very proud of your kids and their coaches.

Runner up in the “Top Canadian” category goes to Mark and Carson who were heard singing “Oh Canada” from the chairlift today.  They may have been off-key and getting some words wrong, but they were patriotic nonetheless!

Erica took the kids into town to do some shopping this afternoon while we prepared supper.

Tonight‘s menu was a penne pasta dish with Italian sausage and cream sauce along with Ceasar salad, cut up veggies and garlic bread.

I was on the hill today to take part in our ceremony so I managed to get some shots of the kids skiing; there are also a few of morning dryland.  Rowan was particularly enthused as we can plainly see!

That’s all for now.

Cheers.

Chris.
